Contractors are busy folks — often managing multiple projects simultaneously. And on top of that, they are concerned about the growth of their business.

How is it possible to keep all the plates spinning and still focus on the successful expansion of your business?

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is key to the continued development of your business. With a strategy in place, you can make SEO work for you.

We’ll outline three easy steps in an SEO strategy that contractors can begin implementing today. And the best part is — you can do it in only twelve minutes a week.

An Easy SEO Strategy in 3 Steps

When people are looking for contractors in a Google search, you want them to see your business name and website at the top of the list. That is what an SEO strategy is about.

Follow the three simple steps below for an SEO strategy that you can do yourself to boost your rankings and bring in more business.

Step #1: List Questions Your Target Audience Is Asking

Every business has a target audience.

As a contractor, your audience may include:

  • Homeowners who are remodeling
  • Clients building new homes
  • Business owners with construction projects

The first step to getting your target audience to your website is to know what they are looking for.

Set aside some time to create a list of 20-40 questions that those in your target audience are asking Google.

Clients needing contractors may be asking questions like:

  • How much does a new roof cost?
  • I live in Portland — where it rains a lot! — Can my roof be fixed in the rain?
  • How much does it cost to tile a bathroom?
  • Can my tile be regrouted or does it need to be replaced?
  • Should I add an addition to my home?
  • Is it cheaper to add an addition to my home or rework my existing layout?

This is stuff you deal with every day as a contractor, and you have the answers to the questions your potential clients are asking.

Once you’ve written out a list of the questions your target audience is asking, you’re ready to move to the next step.

Step #2: Record the Answers to Those Questions

You’ve got answers, and you need to pass them on to your target audience.

We know what you’re thinking, “I certainly don’t have time to sit down and type out answers to all of those questions.”

The good news is — you don’t have to.

Most, if not all, iPhones or Android phones come equipped with some sort of audio recording app. (If your phone doesn’t have one, you can easily download an app from the App store.)

Once you’ve downloaded the app, simply take that list of questions and begin recording the answers as comprehensively as possible.

For example, to answer the question about whether tile should be replaced or regrouted, the answer, “It depends,” isn’t going to be very helpful.

However, recording a message like the following can go a long way in moving your SEO strategy along:

Regrouting tile is a great option if you’re on a tight budget and your existing tile is in good shape. Regrouting takes less time, energy, and funds and can give you a new and updated look. However, if you have missing tiles or damaged tiles — or worse, damage to the walls behind the tile — replacing tile may be the way to go. You’ll end up with a brand new look, take care of existing problems, and have a beautiful end product that will last for years.

Once you’ve recorded some answers, you need to make them accessible to your future clients. That’s where step three comes in.

Step #3: Transfer the Questions and Answers to Your Website/Blog

Once you are finished recording answers to individual questions, you need to get them into a form your readers can accesswith as little time and effort on your part as possible.

It’s easy and quick when you use available tech services that can take your recordings and either turn them into …

  • Videos; or
  • Transcriptions

… that can be placed on your website or blog.

Services like rev.com use technology to transcribe audio content to video that can then be posted on your site or blog.

Another option is to convert audio to text at a minimal cost — around $1.25 per minute. So, a 3-minute audio or video answer would cost less than $4.00 to transcribe and copy and paste as text on your website.

Though pasting transcriptions on your blog may not be the perfect solution, it’s definitely preferable to doing nothing at all.

Even these small efforts can have sizable payoffs when it comes to your SEO growth.

Why SEO Content Is Important for the Growth of Your Contracting Business

Having an SEO strategy is important for several reasons:

  1. Google is one of the first places people go when looking for a service or product. If your business is listed toward the top, the more likely potential clients are to click on your website.
  2. Your competition is investing in their SEO game — and if you don’t want to get left behind, you should invest in it, too.
  3. You’ll be in front of your target audience, which translates to more clients and business coming your way.

What’s a Rich Text element?

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!

How to customize formatting for each rich text

Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.
